We fight for Samuel, we fight for Da'Quain, we fight for justice!

Our community continues to be ravaged by police violence. Every week we hear stories of unfair citations, intimidation of activists, or a killing of a civilian. We mourn and continue to fight the murders of Samuel “SD” Sterling and Da’Quain Tre Johnson. The brutality our community faces at the hands of those who purport to protect us, and the negligence of city officials in the face of this brutality, is unacceptable. But we know the Grand Rapids community will come together to demand justice.

Juneteenth Banner Drop

The Grand Rapids Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression is holding a banner drop to honor families impacted by police violence at 6pm on Friday June 19th. We’ll meet at the Blue Bridge (accessed from 100 Front St NW and 55 Campau Ave NW). We’ll hear speeches from the mothers of Samuel “SD” Sterling and Da’Quain Tre Johnson. Everyone in the community is welcome to join us in solidarity.

Revolutionary Black Panther Actions for Da’Quain Tre Johnson

On February 18, 2026, Da’Quain Tre Johnson, 32, was murdered by police. Police had received reports of someone walking around with a firearm. They saw Da’Quain on his bike and pursued him until he reached the parking lot of Eastern Lofts Apartments. He got off his bike, was mauled by a K-9, and then was shot three times in the back.

There is no justification for these events, for the horror of a man having a normal night and then being pursued by armed men and angry dogs. There is no justification for a man’s family and his neighbors to watch him get shot from their windows. There is no justification for the platitudes of city officials, or for the Kent County prosecutor, Chris Becker, to claim this violence was self defense and let the murderous officers, GRPD officers Chris Carlson and Austin Diekevers, go free.

The Revolutionary Black Panther Party, led by Dr. Alli Muhummad, MD, led an armed march on May 23, 2026 to demand that Chris Becker charge the officers or recuse himself of his position. The party gave Becker 30 days to respond. As of the time of this writing, he has done neither.

In preparation of that 30-day deadline, The Revolutionary Black Panther Party is bringing the community together to plan, to demand justice, and to serve the people. We hope you’ll join us at these events:

Grand Rapids Coalition Against Trump Pride event

We are a proud member of the Grand Rapids Coalition Against Trump. We support all members of the community and we stand with those facing political repression. Our LGBTQ+ members and neighbors have long been besieged by the local, state, and federal government, that is especially true under the Donald Trump presidency. The only way we can fight tyranny is by standing together to oppose it, and we are committed to working across diverse groups in order to do so.

Join us Sunday at 3pm on June 28th at MLK park (1200 M.L.K. Jr St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506). There will be food, games, music, art, sign making, and more. You can meet all the groups currently bound together in this struggle. We welcome all individuals, and if you are a member of a group, we hope you’ll attend or reach out to us to learn more about the coalition.

A City Within a City Book Club

As we work to fight the injustices of racist and political repression in Grand Rapids it is important that we understand the city’s history. We thought the best way to do this would be to read A City Within a City: The Black Freedom Struggle in Grand Rapids, Michigan by Todd E Robinson.

As we’ve never done a bookclub before, we ask that you take this survey so that we can ensure the book club’s structure meets the needs of anyone who would like to attend.

Thank you for working hard with us. We are committed to working hard to fight for justice!

In solidarity,

GRAARPR
